The museum celebrates the cultural heritage of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel region of southern Tasmania. Located just 20 kilometres south of Hobart, the museum welcomes independent travellers, tour groups and cruise ship visitors. Over 24 permanent displays and the library is packed with rare and fascinating insights into the cultural, social, artistic and industrial life of the Channel pioneers and early settlers. Displays include the original Aboriginal inhabitants at Oyster Cove Station, the early explorers and various Channel industries. There are also specialty displays featuring the 1967 bushfires, the Don Norton Camera Collection, the Electrona Carbide Works and the life of Dutch migrants. The representation of a school room, a shop, and colonial-style rooms (kitchen, bedroom, laundry, and workroom) display authentic features of everyday life as it was for earlier generations in regional Tasmania. The displays of sporting memorabilia, churches and social life recreate important social interactions. The Channel Café, located at the museum, has a delicious range of tasty snacks and hearty homemade lunch meals. A range of hot and cool drinks are also available. The Channel Museum is located at 1755 Channel Highway, Margate, and is open Sunday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. a must stop heading south The Margate Train offers shopping with a difference at Margate, only 20 minutes south of Hobart and a short drive south of Kingston. The Margate Train was built in England in 1950 and served as a passenger service between Hobart and Launceston until 1978. The train’s carriages now house a variety of retail businesses including The Pancake Train, Biltong and Beer with a great range of South African foods and delicacy, Choo Chews Lollie Shop, KRANKENWAGEN Collectible Toys, The Faerie Shop, Margate Train Barber and Alchive Wellness Centre. Laziko Kebabs is another popular food shop, as well as Carpet and Mattress Junction, a massive warehouse full of all things flooring and bedding. The Margate Train Traders and Little Wing can be found in the building at the end of the train with a huge range of homewares. There is also a huge antique warehouse and second-hand shop, located in an old IXL apple packing shed, as well as a children’s play area, toilets, baby change facility and plenty of car parking.
