They have a great range of distinctive handcrafts made in near and far lands, from textiles, clay, timber, glass, paper and more. From traditional to contemporary designs, discover a range of wares, including original hand woodblock printed quilts, doona sets and table linen. They also have hemp, organic cotton, bamboo and woollen clothing for adults, children and babies, as well as delicately handcrafted accessories. Kilim hand-loomed and hand-knotted rugs from Afghanistan and wall hangings are also on offer, as are beautiful and unusual toys from timber and textured fabrics. The quality gifts may be either eco-friendly, from recycled materials, locally handcrafted, or providing a fair and sustainable livelihood for producers in other cultures. At near & far, they endeavour to ensure products are made by people who receive fair pay and working conditions within their countries, donate to worthwhile organisations and stock eco-friendly products. near & far is also an associate member of the Fair-Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand. This small museum, in the centre of Cygnet, once the parish hall of the then Methodist Church, holds many aspects of the local area’s history, including the time the French visited in 1802, when Baudin’s crew described their friendly meeting with a young Aboriginal woman, Oura Oura; the first British settlement in 1835; probation stations in 1847; and the development of industries including timber, boat-building and orchards. As a living history museum, there is an eclectic collection of artefacts and pictures that hold the attention of visitors and provides background to a visit of the township. Cygnet Living History Museum Handcrafts from near and far Cygnet is now a diverse community with many talented residents involved in the visual and performing arts. This community has supported events, such as the long-running Cygnet Folk Festival and the Huon Art Exhibitions Group’s annual exhibition in March, coinciding with the Port Cygnet Sailing Club Regatta, still an annual event after more than 150 years. The museum holds history on many aspects of Cygnet’s past, and welcomes visitors, including the many locals who bring memories and family stories.
